For me, the mountain dulcimer and bowed psaltery are more than simply instruments—they led me to a lifelong craft. With 48 years of experience as both a musician and an instrument builder, I’ve spent nearly five decades exploring the unique voice of the wood. At 69, I am enjoying a "musical retirement," staying active in local dulcimer clubs and jams, and performing as half of the duo Dry Run Dulcimer.
My Musical Style
I play primarily by ear, which allows me to connect deeply and intuitively with the music in the moment. Rather than just sticking to the melody, I strive to bring a fresh perspective to every song by:
Developing intricate harmonies that add depth to traditional tunes.
Weaving counter-melodies that create a rich, layered sound.
Building the instruments I play, giving me a unique understanding of how to pull the perfect tone from every string.
The Spirit of the Jam
Whether I’m playing a quiet set with my music partner or anchoring a local dulcimer jam, my goal is to keep the "Dulcimer Dream" alive. I believe this music is meant to be shared, evolved, and enjoyed by everyone who appreciates the honest, resonant sound of the Appalachian mountains.

Music has been a lifelong journey, beginning at the age of six with piano lessons and growing into a love for a wide variety of instruments and musical styles. Over the years, I have studied alto saxophone, hammered dulcimer, and mountain dulcimer through formal instruction, while also teaching myself several other instruments along the way.
As part of Dry Run Dulcimer, I bring both traditional training and a spirit of curiosity—blending technique, versatility, and a deep appreciation for the rich heritage of the dulcimer in all its forms.
My Musical Style
My foundation in piano and notation has given me a strong understanding of musical structure and theory, which carries into my dulcimer playing today. While I often enjoy playing from tablature, I am equally comfortable reading standard notation, allowing for flexibility across a broad repertoire. I pay close attention to timing and tempo, striving to provide a steady rhythmic foundation that helps the music flow smoothly.
The Spirit of the Jam
I enjoy jamming with others and typically use tablature to follow along, which allows me to play confidently and support the group. I am currently developing my ability to play by ear and view each jam session as an opportunity to listen more closely, grow musically, and enjoy the shared experience of making music together.
